The Marco Polo Project uses online social media to improve cultural and linguistic understanding between China and the West. Its main purpose is to improve foreign language capacity among Chinese learners, and Chinese language capacity among learners of Chinese, through the practice of collective translation, and the possibility to develop international networks by taking part in the website’s operations.

Its secondary purpose is to make untranslated Chinese texts available to a wider audience; or to discover emerging Chinese writing.
